History: Textbooks must tell it as it is

Posted: 31 Oct 2010 06:26 PM PDT

SINCE the announcement by Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on 23rd October 23 that History will be made a must-pass Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) subject from 2013, there has been a lot of talk by politicians, university academicians and laymen on the issue of what should be put into the textbooks.

History a pass subject, but whose version?

At Umno's recent 61st general assembly, the prime minister advised the nation to stop questioning Malaysia's "social contract". This was swiftly followed a clearly political decision requiring SPM takers to pass History from 2013. But whose version of history will this be?

In America we all know the saying for Daylight Saving Time: "Fall Back, Spring Ahead," but do you know why we even have Daylight Savings Time? HISTORY is to be a compulsory subject. From 2013, you need to obtain a pass in History to obtain the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia certificate. Yes, we have to know our history so that we know where we come from and appreciate our evolution as a nation.

History: Highly relevant

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 05:14 PM PDT

AS a tertiary student, I agree with the move by the Education Ministry to make History a compulsory subject. But there is a lack of interest in History among students. Students should wake up to the importance of the subject.
