I ENJOYED the history lessons conducted by my teacher, D.S. Ramanathan. In 1948, when there was neither television nor computer, his history lessons came through beautifully. He would take a peep into Windsor Castle and recount the intrigues and ploys of Elizabeth Regina.

HISTORY was my worst subject, followed by Geography, in school. That was because there were too many places, events and dates to remember. And I wasn't good at it.

It is a hopeless task to interpret a symphony, a painting, or a novel. The interpreter at best tries to tell us something about his reaction to the work. He cannot tell us with certainty what the creator's meaning was or what other people may see in it.
